Home Audio Wiring - Stereo Interconnects

Home audio wiring can rewire your social life.

Stereo interconnects are the most basic home audio wiring connectors for your home stereo system. This type of wiring connects two or more components. These are usually referred to as "line level" components. The simplest and most affordable interconnects are RCA Phono stereo interconnects. This is the most common form of wiring used in stereo systems today.

Gold-plated and shielded wires provide enhanced performance. Stereo interconnects can be used to connect CD players, tape decks, or turntables to your amplifier or preamplifier. Home audio wiring interconnects can be balanced or unbalanced. Unbalanced interconnects use two conductors. These are capable of feeding a signal from one device to another.

Stereo interconnects typically consist of a cable with a center conductor and a shield, terminated in an RCA plug. A balanced stereo interconnect carries the electrical signal on internal conductors and the shield acts as a noise shield. This is a more complicated form of home audio wiring and will also cost your more.

So what should you look for when it comes to home audio wiring? Since you can get a wide range of quality in these components try to find stereo interconnects with a copper braid shield rather than foil. Where possible, use interconnects with heavy, thick shields or double shields to help reduce cable noise.

Stay away from interconnects that feature aluminum foil shields. A foil-copper combination is an alternative option that also works fairly well. Bear in mind that all your home audio wiring should be kept as short as possible for better performance.

If you have poor quality stereo interconnects they can be upgraded with some time and financial outlay. As long as your home audio wiring is not corroded or damaged it will perform adequately. However an upgrade will greatly increase the performance of your system.

As far as home audio wiring for your speakers is concerned Audioquest, Cardas, Kimber Kable, Siltech, Goertz, and Nordost do, in fact, make superior wiring products. However at $4-5 per linear foot and as high as $40 per foot it may be impossible for many consumers to afford them.

For those on a tight budget, Home Depot sells orange 50-foot extension cords. Use it as a speaker cable that delivers reasonable sound quality. This alternative form of home audio wiring does an admirable job for the price.

Catching up on Lost, Enjoying Mario Kart and Re-Discovering Charlie Chan
What do those three things have to do with one another? Not much as far as I can tell but we’ve been enjoying the heck out of all three lately. Sometimes you just have to step back, pop in a good movie (or game) and get back to what it’s all about, after all home [...]

HDMI Switcher with Front Display
The other day while cruising through Best Buy for a video card, I noticed a HDMI switcher from “Psyclone” with a front display. I kept on going then I thought to myself, hey a HDMI switcher with a front display, neat. Now I know in a perfect A/V world you wouldn’t even need a HDMI [...]

Confessions of a My Movies Junkie
Most of the indispensable add-on components of my HTPC didn’t start out that way, or rather it’s the quieter, almost utilitarian additions to my HTPC that I couldn’t live without now. The oh golly gee look how cool this thing is gizmos that initially excite, often fall out of favor as time goes on. While [...]

Netflix Rentals on the Xbox 360
Yep, it finally happened. Well not yet, but soon. As a part of this fall’s Xbox Live update, Xbox 360 users will be able to access Netflix’s vast and ever growing library of films at (according to John Schapper, corporate VP of Xbox Live) no additional cost. “Netflix has revolutionized the movie industry, and now that [...]

In my estimation every new Blu-ray player that launches with BD Live capabilities (like Panasonics recent DMP-BD50 ) is a good thing for the format.

It Was Only a Matter of Time
While I wasn’t expecting it this soon, I can’t say as I’m totally taken by surprise to find a Columbia House offer for 3 Blu-ray discs for $4.99 in my mail this week. The offer seems attractive enough, you pick of three discs with movies like 300, I Am Legend, Spider Man 3, Harry Potter [...]

Mini Review: Samsung LNT4065F 40″ 1080p LCD
The video really pushed the boundaries of what I would have assumed possible just a few short years ago, I honestly was beginning to wonder if detail like this was possible from consumer based displays, it clearly (no pun intended) is.

Tube TV’s: Never Can Say Goodbye
Yes I was thinking of that song when I punched in the post title, anyway yeah… While doing a bit of catch-up this week I ran across a headline from Dealerscope that read “Weak Economy Leads to Tube TV Comeback”. I thought for a second, hey didn’t we get rid of tube televisions? Ok, no [...]

Dolby’s Home Theater Buying Guide
I’ve always been a bit leery of “buying guides” as they generally only exist to push specific products or a specific selection of products. But I suppose you could do a lot worse than taking some advice from Dolby Labs, after all they probably already have IP in your home, all they could to do [...]
